Country: United States of America
Organization: One Acre Fund
Closing date: 22 Apr 2024

About One Acre Fund

Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies 1 million smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms vastly more productive. Our 8,000+ team is drawn from diverse backgrounds and professions. With operations across six core countries in Africa, we make farmers more prosperous by providing quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers’ homes, and agricultural training to improve harvests. On average, the farmers we serve harvest 50 percent more food after working with One Acre Fund.

To learn more about our work, take a look at our Why Work Here blog for more information.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced writer to become an important member of One Acre Fund's industry-leading Business Development team. You will partner with our incoming President Andrew Youn as a lead proposal and report writer, and report to the director of the President's fundraising portfolio. Your first 6 months will focus on building fluency and intensive writing mentorship, then you will spearhead writing and project management for 2-3 complex writing projects at any given time, requiring dynamic prioritization. Prior professional writing experience is required, as well as business acumen and a background in project management; business development experience is helpful but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Write grant reports and proposals. Our writing team crafts powerful prose about One Acre Fund's work and customers, with emphasis on logical flow, hard data, and farmer-centric perspectives. You will partner with our President and his team to tailor writing to each donor through a collaborative drafting process, with a focus on detail-orientation, creativity, and responsiveness.
  • Manage complex projects*.* You will oversee all stages of each writing project. You will establish workplans, coordinate input from multiple team members (including building budgets in close collaboration with our finance department, gathering data and context from field teams, and occasionally reaching out directly to donors), and ensure error-free work, typically for 2-3 overlapping projects at any one time.
  • Invest in program fluency*.* You will develop a deep working knowledge of One Acre Fund's operating context, model, results, and future plans. For individual projects, you will also often conduct additional research into potential donors or specific aspects of our work.
  • Provide ad hoc writing/research support to President
  • Comply with team-wide writing tools and systems

Career Growth and Development

We have a strong culture of constant learning and we invest in developing our people. You’ll have weekly check-ins with your manager, access to mentorship and training programs, and regular feedback on your performance. We hold career reviews every six months, and set aside time to discuss your aspirations and career goals. You’ll have the opportunity to shape a growing organization and build a rewarding long-term career.

Qualifications

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

  • Minimum 8+ years of total professional experience, including 5+ years of relevant experience – either writing/managing complex grants or leading complex field programs in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Can share 2-3 writing samples that demonstrate ability to draft readable prose: concise, structured into a logical flow of ideas, deriving power from simplicity rather than jargon.
  • Can share 2-3 concrete examples of initiating, managing, and completing major projects in partnership with senior executive team members.
  • Genuine commitment to rural communities. You are passionate about providing opportunity to the hardest-working farmers on the planet.

About the Role

One Acre Fund is looking to grow our Business Development team with a new relationship manager who will report to our incoming President Andrew Youn and work with our writing, finance, and program teams to steward existing donor relationships and convert new donor relationships over time.

Responsibilities

  • Grant stewardship. You will steward existing donor relationships managed by the President. At first you will partner with the President in this work, but over time you will steadily take on an independent stewardship portfolio.
  • Grant origination. You will partner with the President to build a pipeline of high-value individual and institutional donors, with a primary focus on North American donors.
  • Strategy and partnerships. Increasingly, One Acre Fund's funding arrangements are strategic partnerships with the world's major institutional funders, crafted around goals that align with One Acre Fund's long-term strategy. You will help to design and implement these strategic funding agreements.
  • Team development. Over time, you will hire and manage a team of business development professionals dedicated to the President's fundraising portfolio.
  • Spokesperson for farmers. One Acre Fund contributes to global discussions involving smallholders, including for example climate, gender, and the agricultural financing gap. You will be a spokesperson for our organization, presenting at high-value events across the country and globe.
  • This is a business development role. However, because you will play a role in strategy, partnerships, and operating a small team, we do not necessarily need someone with prior fundraising experience. Instead, we are looking for someone with thoughtful business orientation, together with an abiding commitment to our values of humbly serving farmers.

  • Genuine commitment to rural communities. You are passionate about providing opportunity to the hardest-working farmers on the planet.

Burundi Programs Manager

About One Acre Fund

Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies 1.6 million smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms more productive. Our 10,000+ team is drawn from diverse backgrounds and professions. With operations across ten African countries, we make farmers more prosperous by providing quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers' homes, and agricultural training to improve harvests. On average, the farmers we serve earn 40 percent more profits on the land they enroll with One Acre Fund. To learn more about our work, take a look at our Why Work Here blog for more information.

Established in Burundi in 2012, we are a rapidly growing organization with over 1100 employees nationwide. As of 2024, we serve over 290,000 homes in 7 provinces; Muramvya, Gitega, Kayanza, Mwaro, Ngozi, Muyinga, and Ruyigi. To learn more about our work, look at our Burundi program blog.

The One Acre Fund Burundi program primarily focuses on delivering our core set of services to smallholder farmers:

  • Distribution - One Acre Fund collects orders from and distributes inputs and quality of life products to farmers at the village level. This distribution of thousands of tons of fertilizer, seed, and other products across Burundi profoundly increases farmers’ ability to access these goods as they need to travel less than 30 minutes walking distance to receive them.
  • Credit - The inputs and products we distribute are given to farmers on credit, which increases farmers’ ability to access them even more. Instead of needing to pay all at once, farmers have the flexibility to repay little by little over the course of 5 months in the case of inputs or over the course of multiple years in the case of an expensive product like a solar home system.
  • Training - One Acre Fund offers training in modern agriculture techniques that support farmers to grow their harvests and grow themselves out of poverty. These interactive trainings, which cover techniques from land preparation to post-harvest storage, are delivered in the field by our excellent Field Officers who are hired in the villages where they work.

In addition to those core services, One Acre Fund Burundi offers an increasing number of services related to Market Access which allow farmers to increase the value of their harvests. Finally, the Burundi program also offers services related to agroforestry and fruit tree distribution in order to further improve farmers’ assets and resilience to climate change.

The Burundi program has massive growth potential. With a current budget of around $5 million in annual spending and a working capital budget of over $20 million, we already serve a large portion of Burundi's farmers. With massive farmer demand and a brand that farmers rely on, the Burundi program has a realistic plan to serve more than one-third of farming households across Burundi by 2030.
